Nail Surgery and Removal

Nail Surgery is a minor surgical procedure which is carried out to treat painful toenail conditions.

The most common reasons for nail surgery is ingrown toenails (Onychocryptosis). Other reasons may also include painful ingrowing (Involuted) nails, fungal nail infections (Onychomycosis) or thickened toenails (Onychauxis/Onychogryphosis).

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. The numbness resulting from the anaesthetic usually lasts up to around 6 hours. During this period it is very important to take extra care as to not injure your toe, foot or area of Nail surgery while the anaesthetic is active, as you may not feel any damage caused. It is also advised you do not drive following nail surgery due to your toe or foot being numb.

The surgical procedure involves removal of either all or part the nail depending on the nail condition and surgery required. Phenol can then be applied to the area to prevent regrowth of the nail. If phenol is not used there are risks that the nail may regrow in the same way causing reoccurrence of issues being experienced.

After the surgery, the toe is dressed and we will arrange a follow up appointment to change your dressing and assess the toe and how your wound is healing.

On average the healing process will take between 6 and 12 weeks for full healing. During this time you will be required to self care and manage the wound at home with dressings being supplied by the clinic.

If Phenol has not been applied it will take up to 18 months for full regrowth of your nail to occur.
